How is HRA Exemption Calculated?
As per income tax rules, the least of the following three amounts is allowed as HRA exemption:
- Actual HRA received
- Rent paid minus 10% of Basic Salary
- 50% of Basic Salary (Metro cities) or 40% (Non-Metro cities)
Example:
If your annual basic salary is โน4,00,000, rent paid is โน2,00,000, and HRA received is โน1,50,000:
- 10% of Basic = โน40,000
- Rent paid โ 10% of Basic = โน1,60,000
- 50% of Basic = โน2,00,000
- Least of โน1,50,000, โน1,60,000, โน2,00,000 = โน1,50,000 (this is the exempted HRA)
